Detritus now.
Remains of a day in August
A Geiger counter's chaff.
Gone--
The residue, who we were,
The leavings, what we were,
The rubble, where we were.
Never will be a why.
The prompt is a picture of shadows on a wall. I remembered that the bombing in Hiroshima/Nagasaki took place this coming week, and I recalled that there were shadows of the people killed on the walls that were left standing.
I love the leavings, the residue and the rubble -- This is really imaginative.

DeleteOh, that last line.
ReplyDeleteYes ma'am. Thank you for reading!
DeleteWell now, wasn't that just excellent! Serious. Sobering. But, excellent, just the same. You are a wonderful writer, if I do say so myself! :)
ReplyDeleteThank you! You've made my day!
DeleteThere's a lot of power in those last four lines. Well done. Thanks for linking up!
ReplyDeleteThank you for reading!
DeleteLeavings, residue and rubble - powerful word choices. There isn't a good answer for 'why.'
ReplyDeleteNo, not really. Thank you for reading!
DeleteThank you for reading!
ReplyDeleteVery sobering but good.
ReplyDeleteThat is SOOOOO good! I was actually thinking of those same shadows as I read - so your words evoked exactly what you'd seen!
ReplyDeleteThat would be a truly haunting image!
