Opportunity Lost

WOE Prompt: In honor of the classic Hasbro game and the unforgettable performance of Tim Curry as Wadsworth the Butler, your flash fiction or creative non-fiction piece this week should include the words “candlestick”, “scarlet”, and “library”. The words can be in any context you wish, and you have 250 words (247 of which you can choose yourself).  I just went with the total Clue thing. I loved that game as a kid, because it was the only game where I could whomp my brother.

Miss Scarlet stood directly behind the sleeping Colonel Mustard's chair, the candlestick raised over her head as she contemplated the pompous ass. One good smack to the temple, she thought, imagining the crack of the skull fracturing.  It was as pleasant a daydream as she had ever had since the two had become lovers.

She was tired of Colonel Mustard and his arrogance. It wasn't the kind of tired that would dissolve with distance or time, she knew.  Just the sound of his voice was enough to drive Miss Scarlet into a paroxysm of anger.  An anger that could only be satisfied by the complete eradication of the object of that emotion.

A slight sound let her know that she had a witness, and her arm fell to her side.  Professor Plum stepped out of the shadows in the far corner of the library, his intense eyes locked on hers a moment. He shook his head imperceptibly, his eyes cutting to the door as Mrs.White, Mrs. Peacock, and Mr. Green strolled in from the dining room and sat down in the other chairs in front of the fireplace.

Miss Scarlet deliberately placed the candlestick back on the table as the Colonel started to wake.

  3. I love the way you gave the characters a back story. Nicely done.

  4. I love the idea of the characters of clue murdering each other on their own, not just because of us/people playing the game.

  5. This made me giggle. I'm such a Clue junkie; I like that Professor Plum was ok with Scarlet's intended crime but didn't want her to be caught by the others.

  6. I love the little view into the characters' minds; fun take on the prompt. I especially like that Professor Plum gives me no more than a tiny shake of the head over catching her on the verge of cold-blooded murder. I think I'd like to see more of him!

I welcome comments, but reserve the right to correct your spelling because I am OCD about it!
