Something New-ish

I like the idea of stream of consciousness writing.  I tend to self-edit, cutting out words and shaping my writing before it even leaves my head.  This is not always a good thing, and I need to stretch out of that habit a bit.

Today’s (optional) prompt: What color defines you?

I have always been partial to the color black.  I think that it goes well with my skin tone, and when I wear black I feel more put together, more elegant, more in control of myself.  Consequently, I wear a great deal of black.  As a result, number of people have come to me to ask after my mental state, because they've heard that black is associated with depression.   This irritates me, which leads them to feel that their concerns were justified, and the cycle never seems to end.

The color that defines me, however, is purple. This color is often associated with spirituality, magic, and myth.  I am a student of spirituality, magic, and myth. These subjects are a part of who I am, even if I don't talk about them with just anybody.

There's a scene from the movie The Color Purple, when one of the characters tells another that it makes God crazy when people walk by the color purple and don't notice.  I always notice the color purple.  One of my favorite poems starts off with "When I am an old woman I shall wear purple..."  I think it is a lovely poem.

I love a dark, deep, purple, the color of a ripe eggplant.  It's the color just before the angel of the night draws his wings over the canopy of the sky, as the stars burst into view, one by one.  There's mystery in that color--as though you could reach in and pull any number of galaxies from within.  I think of myself, my search for meaning, as a mystery.  Seeing this color makes me feel happy.  I think that I need more of this color in my life, because I feel more detached from the world than ever these days. At least in some ways.

  1. Okay between you an Julie, I am really feeling purple ;-) I love the color of eggplant. And I think people can tell by they WAY a person wears black what their state of mind is. To assume otherwise is a bit narrow-minded. I like all black too.

I welcome comments, but reserve the right to correct your spelling because I am OCD about it!
